¶1 Defendant Kelvin T. Young appeals his conviction for knowingly possessing a prohibited weaponÄÄa shotgun that had been sawed off to an overall length and a barrel length that were shorter than Arizona law permits. The shotgun, though disassembled and inoperable, was not irreparably so. We consider on appeal, among other issues, whether, to prove the culpable mental state of knowing possession of a prohibited weapon, the State must establish a defendant's knowledge (1) of the prohibited characteristics of the weapon or (2) that the weapon is not permanently inoperable.
